Dame

Here is a term with many implications. It might be applied to a noble lady or simply the mistress of a respectable household. Our Hannah was probably addressed as "Dame" simply because she was a well-liked and well- regarded middle-aged woman. Gilbert identifies her parenthetically as Rose's aunt; but if Rose was what she claimed to be, namely a foundling, Hannah must be her aunt by adoption.
