A native of the American southwest, James is an Actor/Singer/Director based in New York City. He has a BA in Theatre from the University of New Mexico where he studied Acting and Linguistics. James is a lifelong lover of G&S and makes a living as a principal comic baritone, or "patter man," with the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players. In over a dozen seasons with NYGASP, James has performed in all 13 of the surviving G&S comic operas either in NYC, on tour across the country, or in the UK at the International G&S Festival.
Most recently seen as John Wellington Wells in The Sorcerer, favorite G&S roles include Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B. in H.M.S. Pinafore, Reginald Bunthorne in Patience, the Lord Chancellor in Iolanthe, Jack Point in The Yeomen of the Guard, Major-General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance, Dr. Tannhauser the Notary in The Grand Duke, and Tarara, the Public Exploder in Utopia, Limited. Mr. Mills was also the original Tech Director and Stage Manager of NYGASP's own touring cabaret, I've Got a Little Twist, in which he now plays the Comic Patterman
As a college student, James trained in the Vocal Company at the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, MA. He has returned to CLOC, this time as the Stage Director of 2016’s The Yeomen of the Guard, and 2017’s productions of Patience and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Up next for James at CLOC, The Pirates of Penzance, a G&S Sing-Along Concert, and the 50th Anniversary Jubilee Gala. He is a proud member of Actors Equity Association.
